I think you don't choose to be a filmmaker, because it's easy. I think you become a filmmaker because you have something to say. There are certain themes that I'm drawn to, and that I have been drawn to over and over in my career and their focus on resilience and identity. I found such incredible stories of resilience within the military community. I just wanted to delve deep into military stories and ended up doing a lot of nonfiction work leading to me writing a fiction script about some of those issues. And then there's this emphasis on media that matters that I believe very strongly. We have to tell stories that matter. These things have an impact. It's sort of shapes our conversations, and so we have to be aware of why we want to put the stories that we care about in the world.
